The Activities

A comprehensive programme of activities can be provided, all of which are accessible from the Centre without the need for transport. For off-site activities e.g. Caving, where transport is required either the Centre can provide a minibus or alternatively a local hire company can be recommended.

Our philosophy places the emphasis on the encouragement of young people to develop their appreciation of the environment, their own personalities and improve self-esteem. A team of enthusiastic, experienced and well-qualified instructors using a gentle, positive and supportive approach to teamwork aim to achieve this.

We provide a broad range of established adventurous activities, developed with safety as a first priority, any of which can be selected to suit the needs of you and your group.

There are also activities, which can take place whatever the weather. These can be used to replace others affected by adverse conditions or simply rescheduled as required.

All of our specialist activity equipment is maintained or renewed on a regular basis to ensure a consistently high standard.

A typical activity session =  6 young people plus 1 adult and lasts approx. 3 hours.

Outdoor Water Activities

Stand Up Paddleboarding, Sit-on tops, Kayaking, Open Canoeing, Improvised Raft Building, Powerboating and Dinghy sailing are all accessible directly from the Centre. All of which, except for the Powerboats which are permanently berthed in the nearby marina, are launched from our own slipway just metres away.

Our modern Kayak fleet is suitable for a wide range of ages and sizes, with a selection of BCU Paddlesport courses also available. Open Canoes allow even the novice group to go for a short trip across the harbour to a local beach.

The River Dart is only 10 miles from the centre where our fleet of Open canoes can take you on a trip away from it all in the beautiful scenery of the Dart valley.

Laser Pico and RS Vision dinghies allow for the RYA dinghy scheme to be comprehensively covered. Whole days out give the opportunity to see a lot more of the bay.

RYA Dinghy & Powerboat Courses can also be arranged upon request.

Coasteering is only a walk away. The coastline between Breakwater beach and Berry Head offers a variety of challenges and is ideal for a first time experience. Alternatively Start Point provides further adventure in a more challenging and remote location.

See our Prices page for the RYA and BCU courses available.

Outdoor Land Activities

A state of the art High Ropes Course is the flagship Centre based activity providing ideal team and personal challenges. Climb the 'Jacob's Ladder' or leap for the trapeze if you dare! To add an extra twist you can even do it at night time under floodlights!

Rock Climbing can take place all over Dartmoor in a varied number of locations including Haytor, Houndtor and the Dewerstone. Spending either a half day or the whole day developing your climbing skills, the location chosen will depend on the group and the weather or possibly the programme, especially if combined with a walk on the moor or Caving.

Dartmoor offers numerous options for Moorland Walking depending on the distance to be covered, the group, and scenery required. Alternatively the South Devon Coast path is 15 minutes' walk from the Centre with stunning views towards Dartmouth and the west.

Abseiling typically involves a short walk to Berry head followed by a 25m (80ft) descent into the quarry.

Orienteering also takes place up on Berry Head where courses are set according to the group's abilities. Problem Solving and Low Ropes combine a series of mental and physical challenges and is specifically aimed at highlighting various aspects of teamwork. Environmental studies are also available provided by the excellent staff of Berry Head Coast and Countryside Trust.

Inside our converted Chapel/Schoolroom there is a Climbing Wall and a Bouldering Wall which can accommodate up to 4 groups at the same time ( 24 young people plus 4 leaders ), thus providing a fully active climbing experience available in any weather and at any time of the year. Heating is also available if needed.

Problem Solving is a versatile activity, which can also take place indoors, using mobile equipment for a number of challenging team tasks that require a combination of both mental and physical teamwork.

Although only indoor by default Caving is an excellent all year round weather independent activity. Using Pridhamsleigh caverns and Baker's Pit near Buckfastleigh once inside it does not matter what is happening above ground as this unique and unforgettable experience will take your mind back millions of years, until you return to the surface slightly muddier than when you went in.

Centre Based Activities

Groups participating in Arts and Crafts, Drama and Music Workshops can also use the Dining room and common room, Chapel and Classroom. The Chapel is even large enough for concerts to be held in.

Smart T.V., DVD, Multimedia Projector, Flip-chart, whiteboard and chalkboard are also available.
