Abseiling

What is it?

Abseiling uses a rope and a ‘Figure of 8’ device which creates friction on the rope to enable you to walk down a vertical rock face in a controlled manner.

Abseil-3a

What to expect on an abseiling session?

Based in the dramatic setting of Berry Head Quarry, your instructor will kit you up in a harness and helmet before giving you a safety briefing and demonstration of how the system works. You will then have a 1 to 1 coaching experience as you approach the abseil platform, attached safely to two ropes. Your instructor will talk you through each step while keeping you secure on a safety rope, so you can focus on being in control of the abseil rope. You will then be encouraged to take on the challenge of descending the 25m rock face down into the bottom of the quarry. It is then just a short walk back up the path to the top. Participants will take part one at a time while the rest of the group can sit and watch from the top.

What will I need to wear?

  • Sturdy footwear
  • Long shorts or trousers
  • T-shirt which covers your shoulders
  • Long hair tied back
  • Remove jewellery
  • A warm layer as it can get windy up there!
