Orienteering

What is it?

Using maps, you will navigate around a course in search of wooden marker posts, spread across the Nature Reserve at Berry Head

Orienteering 1

What to expect on an Orienteering session?

From our site you will begin with a walk up through Berry Head woods and along to Berry Head Fort, which will be the base for the session. Your instructor will issue maps and then organise the group into small teams. Following the safety brief, you will be taught how to use the maps and interpret the area as well as learn the boundaries. The teams will then be sent to find a different numbered post and return having remembered the order of coloured stripes on the post. The team will then be issued a new map, with a new number on it to go and find. Some teams will enjoy the competition and some will just enjoy the exploration around this beautiful site. Sessions are suited to ability and instructors will choose the difficulty of markers they should find to support progression.

What will I need to wear?

  • Sturdy footwear
  • Suitable clothing
  • A warm layer as it can get windy up there!
