Raft Building

What is it?

An activity involving teamwork and some good knot tying! Groups will work in small teams to build a raft out of poles, barrels and ropes. They will then get chance to test out their raft on the sea.

Raft 11

What to expect on a Raft Building session?

Down on the promenade, you will be working in small teams to build a raft. Your instructor will demonstrate how to construct it, how to tie the best knots and how to handle the equipment. They will then assist your team in building the raft together. Once the rafts are built you will be issued with wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets and paddles before heading back down to the rafts where we will give you a land-based demo and instructions on how to use your paddles. It will then be a team effort to carry your rafts a short distance along the promenade to our own slipway into the harbour. From there we will launch the rafts and practice some paddling as a team. The instructors will accompany the rafts on the water in a safety boat. Once we have gotten all the rafts launched we will get the rafts to line up for some races and challenges. You will be given the opportunity for those that want to get wet to jump in, before returning to the slipway and helping your team to dismantle the rafts. On return to the centre there are external changing rooms with hot showers for your use afterwards.
